I had the same excellent koto experience that practically everyone else had: a personable and -very- talented teacher, a fun experience, and an excellent memory to bring back home! I would absolutely recommend adding Soushunan to your itinerary in Kyoto.
For those that may be interested, I will also add: I only know a few phrases in Japanese and it was not a problem to understand/communicate in English; the instructor emphasized how to play the koto -correctly- (and not just muddle through the piece), which I thought enhanced the lesson; and the lesson was paced to how quickly I learned so we were able to play a few different songs/variations. The only negative part of the experience was knowing how much trouble I would get in at home if I bought a koto to continue learning...
Shimazaki-sensei !
